Mini-split systems are the latest innovative and versatile option for cooling and heating indoor environments. However, there are some factors to consider before deciding to purchase one.

Initial Expense

The cost of investing in a mini-split system depends on the number of rooms requiring unit installation or the overall size of the system. Primary cost may run 30% to 200% more than traditional central cooling and heating units. However, brands bearing the Energy Star label enable consumers to save money on utility bills in the long run.

Aesthetic Considerations

Traditional units cool and heat multiple rooms by sending temperature controlled air via ductwork and venting. Mini-split systems require units to be installed in each room where climate control is needed. Each indoor unit is then connected to a single outdoor unit via invisible piping. Although the indoor units come in a variety of sizes, they are not as discreet in appearance. Thus, some consumers may deem them as an eyesore.

Maintenance Needs

Forced air systems require filter replacement every one to six months to ensure clean and unobstructed air flow into and out of the system. On the other hand, mini-split systems come with a reusable filter that must be manually cleaned on a monthly basis to ensure proper unit function. Additionally, each indoor unit installed contains a filter that requires a maintenance measure. Indoor environments housing pets or smokers mean that the filters would require cleaning even more frequently. Improperly maintained systems cycle more often, which increases utility bills and eventually shortens the life of the system.

Extreme Climates

Although mini-split systems are considered more efficient in general, locations having climate extremes decrease their efficiency. Thus, potential clients must reconsider if living in climates where summer temperatures exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit or winter temperatures are known to drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
